Edmund W. Carey

Published June 03,2019

Obituary's Biography:

Edmund Walter Carey, 93, a resident of Gurnee, IL, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2019 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, IL.  He was born October 10, 1925 in Chicago, IL to Paul and Marie Carey.

Passing away at 93 years young, Ed left his mark on everyone he met. Known for his keen sense of humor, his ‘Careyisms,’ or favorite sayings, will live on forever. Ed often joked that he was so old that when he was born, the Dead Sea was just sick.

Ed was a handyman, willingly volunteering to help family and friends with renovation projects. He “left a little blood on every job” at many basement remodels, deck constructions, and other home improvement projects.

Ed loved to spend time with his friends, family, and grandchildren. He was quick to pour you a drink, ask you to “cop a squat,” and would tell best stories about growing up in a Chicago hotel and his time in WWII. Aside from being a walking encyclopedia, he was also the reason his children passed their high school algebra classes.

Edmund is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 33 years, Janet Knight-Carey, his children Jennifer (Jeremy) Laffin, Julie (Mark) Boyer, Lisa Carey, Debra (Jack) Clark, Robert (Dana) Carey, Lori Egan, and his 11 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Alice, and his brothers Jules and Gene.  A private service will be held at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery this summer followed by a celebration of his life where all of his favorite foods (ribs, cupcakes, ham sandwiches, Old Fashioneds, and Snickers bars) will be served, just as Ed would have wanted.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight of Wisconsin https://www.starsandstripeshonorflight.org/ or the Alzheimer’s Foundation https://www.alz.org/illinois .  All funeral arrangements were entrusted to Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium 410 E. 1. Dear Jan and family, a perfect tribute to Ed. We wiminll certainly miss Ed and his mundane jokes. We are so glad he was part of our lives. Always smiling. We were one of those he did a project for while we were in HeatherRidge. We had many a laugh in our pinochle group while drinking double margaritas. We know his passing will leave a big void in your life. Try to fill it with happy memories. Love, marv and mary anne Nielsen
