Obituary's Biography:

Margaret “Marg” Hill, 86, of Wildwood, IL, passed away on 07 May 2025.  Born in Webster, South Dakota on 06 October 1938, Marg devoted her professional life to education. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the College of St. Teresa in Winona, MN and a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Following graduate school, Marg joined the faculty at her alma mater, the College of St. Teresa, and later became a faculty member in the mathematics department at St. Mary’s College, both in Winona, MN.   Marg then moved to Chicago and joined Science Research Associates (SRA), a subsidiary of IBM, writing math tests. In partnership with her steadfast colleague and dear friend, Jan Katien, she co-founded Hill, Katien & Associates in 1992. Together in 1997, they joined Measured Progress, where they developed statewide testing programs in math and English.  Marg retired in 2014.

“Our Marg” came into our lives when she was 31 years old and took on the huge role of helping raise 11 children along with Dad.  They taught us to never lose our way in what is meaningful. Her dedication to each one of us and her grandchildren was profound. Marg guided us with patience and wisdom through childhood into adulthood, always selflessly giving of herself. Her deepest devotion was to our father, William F. Hill, her cherished husband, fellow traveler, friend and confidante for 39 years.

Marg’s mathematical genius and problem-solving skills shone not only in her career, but in her many passions: gardening, birding, sewing, gourmet cooking, poetry, reading, and her love for the ocean and camping. She was a woman of great intellect, quiet creativity, and deep love. From Marg and Dad, we lovingly received both quantitative and qualitative counsel—a depth and breadth of love which is the legacy of the Hill family. Thank you, Dad, for bringing Marg into our lives. Our memory and love of Marg, like you, is eternal.

Marg is survived by her eleven children who proudly and affectionately carry on her legacy: William (Juanita-decd.), James (Christine), Mary Helen, Frances (Jerry) McBroom, Kathleen (Ken) Kastler, Paul (Gina), Thomas (Mary), Teresa (Bill) Kubovy, Joseph (Sue), Bernadette (John) Szymski, Margaret (Jim) Jaeger and Stephanie Edwards-Hill.  She is also survived by 28 grandchildren: William, Katy, Patrick, Daniel, Jennifer, Amanda, Jennifer, Brian, Mark, David, Lyle, Christopher, Kyle, Erin, Nicholas, Tania, Victoria, Matthew, Ryan, Kevin, Cody, Kayla, Brianna, Stephen, Lainey, Amanda, Samantha, and Timothy; and 24 great grandchildren.  Marg was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Angela Roth and is survived by her sister, Judy (Gene) Sovereign, her brother James (Sally) Roth, her nieces Kathy (Kurt Hansen), Katrina, Megan and her nephew Robbie (Nancy) Bouillion.

A burial and memorial gathering will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to JourneyCare Home Health and Hospice or WBEZ Chicago, or a charity of your choice.  Arrangements entrusted to Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 410 E. Belvidere Rd., Grayslake, IL 60030. For information, call 847-223-8122 or log on to www.strangfuneral.org.
