Barbara C. Palazzolo

Barbara C. Palazzolo, age 76, a longtime resident of Wildwood for 53 years, passed away at her home on Wednesday, January 13, 2016.  She was born on December 19, 1939 in Chicago.  She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Church and a Gagewood Lioness.  From 1985-2005 she was chief deputy assessor for Warren Township and school bus driver for nine years for Woodland School District 50 and worked for Abbott Labs from 1958-1964.  She received the Lions’ International Melvin Jones Fellow award and the Illinois Lions’ Foundation Fellow Award. She was a member of the Lake County Woman’s Bowling Association.  She is survived by her husband, Victor, whom she married on May 4, 1963; her children, Steven (Sue) Palazzolo of Gurnee and Anita (Will) Gregory of Sturgeon Bay, WI; grandchildren, Nicholas, Timothy, Miranda and Julia; brother Thomas (Annette) Cwik; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Caroline Cwik, a sister, Lorraine Mora and a brother, James Cwik.  Friends of the family may visit from 2 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday January 16, 2016 at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 410 East Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL 60030. Adolph “Sonny” Rathunde Jr

Adolph “Sonny” A. Rathunde Jr., 81, a resident of Grayslake, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He was born May 16, 1934 in Chicago to Mildred (nee: Sarley) and Adolph Rathunde Sr. Adolph owned Sonny’s Bakery until 1980 and Dawn’s Tastee Freez from 1970 until 1998 and enjoyed old cars. Adolph is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dawn, whom he wed on June 25, 1955 in Chicago, his children Steven (Debra) of Round Lake Park, Edward (Vicki) of Marana, AZ, Donald (Lynn) of Cookeville, TN, Russell of Lake Villa, Dawn (Jerry) Ring of Trevor, WI, Ronald (Susan) of Glendale, AZ, and Diane (Paul) Acutt of Antioch, his 18 grandchildren, his 21 great-grandchildren, his siblings Melvin (Alice), Mildred (Chuck) Frederick, Lois (Carl) Thunderburk, Robert (Marilee), Sandra Conant and Patricia Henrichson, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Marilyn. Elaine M. Norkus

Elaine M. Norkus, 76, a resident of Fox Lake, IL passed away Monday, January 11, 2016 in Lindenhurst, IL. She was born October 17, 1939 in Chicago, IL to Chester and Marie Thomas. Elaine was a member and part of the choir at St. Joseph Church in Round Lake. She enjoyed making crafts, socializing, and being with her grandkids. Elaine is survived by her children; Leo (Lori) Norkus, Bill (Joanne) Norkus, Ken Norkus, Tom (Joanie) Norkus, Mary Fiene, and Suzanne Reiker, her grandchildren, Melissa, Jeri, Alaina, Jennifer, Tyler, Joshua, Chad, Tara, Shane, MacKenzie, Ryan, and Seth, eight great-grandchildren, her sister Bobbie (Larry) Polubinski, and her niece Jackie (Dennis) Box. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Leo Norkus. Shirley M. Weidner

Shirley Mae Weidner, age 83, a 19-year resident of Mesa, AZ and formerly of Libertyville, passed away Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa, AZ. She was born on January 4, 1932 in Lake Forest to Elmer and Helen Hoffman. Shirley graduated from Libertyville High School in 1949 and furthered her education at St. Therese School of Nursing, graduating in 1952. On August 23, 1952, she married Robert W. Weidner at Santa Maria Del Popolo. They lived in California and Washington while Bob was in the Army. Returning to Illinois in 1953, she worked for several years at St. Therese, then worked at Advocate Condell Medical Center for 40 years. After her retirement she worked part-time for Quantum Health Resources and transferred to Mesa, AZ to a warmer climate and lots of sunshine. Shirley is survived by her three children, Pam DeVore of Waukegan, Gerry (Julie) Weidner of Gurnee, and Dan (Carolyn Nobbe) Weidner of Eagle River, WI; four grandchildren, Robert (Jennifer) DeVore, Amanda (Angel) Arzet, Gracie (AJ) Kegg, and Trevor Weidner; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Tober and Evelyn Karlasky; and one brother-in-law, Dick Weidner. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Robert in 2003. Patricia E. Winningham

Patricia Elise Winningham, 74, a resident of Round Lake, IL, passed away Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Advocate Condell Medical Center. She was born September 28, 1941 in Linary, TN. Pat was a retired executive secretary and a member of the Allstate Retiree Club. She was a world traveler with her life companion Dan and was a kind and caring women who loved her family deeply. Pat’s career of over 30 years was spent at Allstate, 3com, and Astellas. She truly touched many hearts and will be deeply missed. Pat is survived by her soulmate of 20 years, Daniel Kummer, her daughter Rebecca (Eric Byant) Greenwood, and her grandchildren Danielle Linck, Lauren (Chase) Stuart, and Matthew Prueter. Charles P. Atlman

Charles “Chuck” Paul Altman, 78 of Kenosha, WI for the past 12 year formally of Round Lake Beach, IL for 58 years went home to the lord surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, January 7th. Charles was the only child of the late Ernest and Grace Altman (nee Peddie). Preceeded in death by his parent, son Jerry, as well as many dear family members and friends. Survived by his loving wife and best friend of nearly 44 years Judie (nee Solberg), mother-in-law Betty Solberg, daughter Jodi (Lane) Cagle and son Jason (Courtni) Altman, adored granddaughters Stephanie (Adam) Altman, Abby Cagle and Natalie Altman. Two loving grandsons, Cory Cagle and Devin Goetz. Proud Papa (Great Grandpa) of Gavin Loftus. Charles was proud to be in the first graduating class of Round Lake High School in 1956. Together with his wife, Charles was the talented and well respect owner of Altman’s Flower and Gift Box in Round Lake Beach for over 38 years. He was involved for over 50 years in the floral industry both on a national and state level. He served as President of the Round Lake Chamber of Commerce and served on the board. More recently he served the Keonsha Community as a volunteer for the Kemper Center especially his annual decorating of the Durkee Mansion. Aside from spending time with his cherished family, Chuck enjoyed scrapbooking, photography, gardening, shopping, traveling, card playing and always looked forward to a call from his dear friends. Visitation will be at Trinity Lutheran Church, 25519 W. Rte 134, Ingleside, IL on Sunday, January 10th from 4PM-9PM. Visitation will continue at the church on Monday from 10AM-12PM followed by a funeral service lead by the Reverend Lisle Kauffman. Luncheon will follow at the church. Leona Rae Rogal

Leona Rae Rogal, age 70, a resident of Round Lake Beach, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2015 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. She was born on January 31, 1945 in Omaha, NE to Day and Nellie Newbold. Leona was a kind and caring wife, mother, grandmother, friend and co-worker to anyone she worked with. She always tried to help out whenever she could and in any way she could. She loved nature, animals, camping, crocheting and knitting, kids, and people in general. She was a loyal friend to friends, those in her church, and even total strangers. She loved helping out the less fortunate and she never complained about anything or let anything get in her way, even later on when she was ill. She loved her family and friends, was concerned for them and she worried when they didn’t keep in touch. She loved to babysit children and crochet hats and blankets for them. Leona was a nurse’s aide when she was younger, but in later years switched to daycare and working with children. Kids and family were her world. She was always doing crafts with kids, so that they could give them to their parents for Christmas. She was a member of the Gurnee S.D.A. Church in Gurnee, IL and tried to attend services, when her health allowed her to. Leona is survived by her husband, Walter, whom she married on May 25, 1973 in Chicago; her daughter, Renee Rogal of Round Lake Beach; and her granddaughter, Mary Rogal of Round Lake Beach. She is also survived by nine brothers and sisters: Ellen Baker of Fruita, CO, Virginia Lemons of Medford, OR, Florence Rutherford of Wheatland, WY, Dave Newbold of Carr, CO, Nettie (Tootes) Pershing of Riverside, CA, Lenora (Nory) Wilkinson of Rubicon, WI, Roberta (Bert) Molkentin of Paulden, AZ, Anita (Nita) Newbold of Hartford, WI, and Vernon (Bud) Newbold of Wheatland, WY. Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Nellie and Day Newbold and her siblings, Priscilla (Pokey) Clark and William (Bill) Newbold. George Walter Thoren

George Walter Thoren, age 66, a resident of Grayslake, passed away Thursday, December 31, 2015 at his home. He was born March 1, 1949 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Walter and Stella (nee Drakos) Thoren. An avid car enthusiast, George was an amateur race car driver and member of the Sports Car Club of America. He loved animals and was very proud of his sons and the mother of his children, Sarah. George is survived by his sons, Dylan of Mundelein, Chris of Chicago, and Ian of Vernon Hills; his siblings, Cathy (Godfrey) Tschiltsch of California, Bruce of California, and Gus of California; and many nieces and nephews. George is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Antony. Judith “Judy” A. Martin

Judith “Judy” A. Martin, 76, a resident of Gurnee, IL passed away Sunday, January 3, 2016, at her home. She was born May 20, 1939 in New York, NY to Gus and Helen Levine. Judy is survived by her sons Vincent (Rebecca) Martin and Christopher (Vanessa) Martin, her granddaughters Alexa and Isabella, her sister Marilyn “Marny” (Tom) McManus, her brother Jordan “Jordy” Levine, her niece and nephews Thomas Paul, Craig, Howard, Michael, Laurie, and Michael Paul Martin, and her friends Vicki, Dave, Amber, and Andrea. Arvilla Johnson

Arvilla Johnson, age 99, of Clearbrook, Minnesota, passed away Thursday, December 30, 2015 at Fair Oaks Rehabilitation Center in South Beloit, Illinois. She was born May 10, 1916 in eastern Saskatchewan. She was a seamstress and a farmer’s wife. Arvilla is survived by one sibling, Pearl Westrum; her son, Paul Johnson; her grandchildren, Mary (Nickel) Hopp, Elizabeth Johnson, Paul Johnson Jr., Charity Johnson, Ralph Johnson; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Churchill Johnson, whom she married on February 9, 1934; siblings, Genevieve Torgeson, Ted Erickson, and Orville Erickson; her children, Dale Johnson and Ione (Johnson) Nickel; and grandchildren, John Nickel and Dawn Johnson.
