Round Lake

Robert Frank Kula, 92, a resident of Round Lake, IL, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family on January 20, 2026. He was born on November 26, 1933 in Waukegan, IL to Walter and Katherine Kula. From a young age, he developed a deep love of family, country, and tradition- values that guided him throughout his life.

A proud United States Marine Sergeant, Bob served his country with honor and carried that pride with him always. Following his military service, he worked for the North Shore Gas Company, where he met his beloved wife of 65 years, Diana.

After working at the gas company, he was employed by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company as a computer analyst. Finally, he worked for the Department of Defense at the JCC in North Chicago, a job he truly loved and that gave him great satisfaction.

He was deeply committed to service and community. He served as Athletic Director at St. Gilbert School, President of the Highland Lake Association, and as a member of the Grayslake High School Board, giving generously of his time and leadership whenever he was needed.

A man of strong Catholic faith, he found great comfort in his beliefs, especially after the loss of his beloved wife, whom he missed dearly every day. Family was the center of his life, and he took immense joy in his grandchildren. He was especially delighted- and a little amazed- to become a great-grandfather, something he never thought he would live to see.

He had a lifelong love of sports, especially his Chicago Cubs and Bears. Some of his fondest memories were from his youth, playing horseshoes on the weekends with his father and brothers, with Cubs games playing on the radio in the background. In his younger years, he enjoyed tennis, golf, and snowmobiling with his nephews. He was also a skilled bowler, having been in many leagues throughout his life. Later in life, he stayed active with bike rides through the local nature preserves, always enjoying his time outdoors.

Above all, he will be remembered as a devoted family man, a faithful Catholic, a proud Marine, and a man who served his community and country with integrity, warmth, and quite strength.

Robert is survived by his children Karen (Tom) Sircher of Ingleside, Bob (Laura) Kula of Grayslake, Gerry Kula of Round Lake, and Joanne Kula of Round Lake, his grandchildren Tom (Kristen) Sircher of Wisconsin, Kristen (Shawn) Blough of Ingleside, Bobby (Rosario) Kula of Grayslake, Tony Kula of Chicago, Jessica Kula of Chicago, and Paul Kula of Chicago, and his great-grandchildren Thomas and Parker Sircher, Evan, Ben, and Blakely Blough; his sister, Annette (Bobby) Jackson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Diana Kula; his parents, Walter and Katherine Kula; his grandson, Nicholas Kula; his siblings, Walter (Jean) Kula, Richard (Darlene) Kula, and Betty (John) Rygiel.
