It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Randy Swanson, 66, a devoted husband, proud father, loving brother, uncle and loyal friend, and protector of those in need. He was born on March 14, 1960 in Chicago, IL to Richard and Patricia (nee Rydin) Swanson.
Randy was one of six children and was known as the one everyone could count on.
Standing 6’7”, he was impossible to miss, but it was the size of his heart that people remembered most. Randy spent his life looking out for others, always ready to lend a hand, offer encouragement, or stand up for someone who could not stand up for themselves.
One story that perfectly captures Randy’s character took place during his high school years when he witnessed a special needs student being bullied. They scattered her books across the hall. Randy immediately stepped in. He made the bullies pick up the books they had knocked from her hands and insisted the bullies pick up the books and escort her safely to class. He made it clear that anyone who mistreated her would answer to him. That was Randy -strong, compassionate and his unwavering in his commitment to protecting others. He never looked for any recognition.
Randy’s greatest pride and joy was his son, Blake. He loved being Blake’s father and cherished watching him grow into the man he became. Their bond was extraordinary, and Randy was immensely proud of the person Blake is today. Blake remained by his father’s side through life’s most difficult moments, caring for him with the same love and devotion Randy had always shown him.
Randy shared a beautiful love story with his wife, Mary. She was the love of his life, his biggest supporter, and his faithful sidekick through every challenge and triumph. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering commitment.
Randy cherished his relationships with his brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews immensely. Knowing they were ok and wanting to protect them as well as laugh with them
A gifted carpenter, Randy spent his career building beautiful homes and creating lasting craftsmanship that will stand for generations. He took great pride in working with his hands and helping families create places they could call home. Just as he built homes, he built relationships founded on trust, kindness, and integrity.
Randy also had a special love for dogs and was a dedicated dog trainer. His dogs were family, and he found great joy in caring for and working with them.
Randy’s sense of humor was legendary. He could light up any room, make people laugh when they needed it most and find joy even in difficult moments. His laughter was contagious, his stories unforgettable, and his ability to make others smile was one of his greatest gifts. He lived with a heart full of love and a spirit full of humor.
Though Randy faced many struggles at the end of his life, he met them with courage, determination and the support of those who loved his most. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, loyalty, compassion and a sense of humor that everyone knew.
Randy will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Mary; his cherished son, Blake, his brothers and sisters; extended family, friends and all whose lives were touched by his kindness and generosity.
While our hearts are broken, we find comfort knowing that Heaven has gained a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, loyal friend, master carpenter, a dog lover, a Chicago Bears superfan and one of the funniest men to ever walk this earth.
May we remember Randy for the lives he strengthened, the people he protected, and the love he gave so freely.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:23
