Mae E. Backovitch (née Barber), 99, of Grayslake, Illinois, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025, at Hillcrest Nursing Center in Round Lake Beach. Mae was a devoted woman of faith, a pillar of her community, and a beloved friend to many.
Her life was defined by her love for the Lord, her family, and her friends. Mae was a longtime member of the Community Church of Round Lake, where she served on numerous committees and helped organize the annual rummage sale for many years. More recently, she attended Hope Church, continuing her commitment to fellowship and spiritual growth.
Mae’s passion for giving back extended far beyond the church. She was a founding member and past president of the Board of Trustees of the Round Lake Area Public Library, where she served on many committees and championed literacy and access. She once said, “A library in a community is a very meaningful building, serving all the people for pleasure and education.” Her words reflect the values she lived by.
She also volunteered at Condell Hospital for thirty years and gave generously of her time to Meals on Wheels and other local causes. Her dedication to service touched countless lives and left a lasting legacy in the Round Lake area.
Mae was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Glen Backovitch; her eldest son, David Backovitch; and a great-granddaughter. She is survived by her son, John Backovitch, and his wife, Lily; granddaughters Christine Endicott (Christopher) and Michele Deal (Troy); six great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and her devoted caregiver and dear friend, Georgia Birutas, whose companionship and care brought comfort and joy in her final years.
Mae will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering commitment to her community. Her legacy lives on in the institutions she helped build and the lives she enriched.
