Lawrence P. Staunton

Lawrence P. Staunton, 83, passed away June 2, 2026 in his Grayslake home embraced by his wife and daughter. Lawrence was born to Sarah Belle and Arthur Kestler in NY, NY. He met his beloved Lynn in California as teenagers and they were married in 1962. His only child, Susan, was born a year later. Lawrence (Larry), received his Ph.D. in Mathematical Physics at UCLA under Professor Robert Finkelstein (known for his work with Oppenheimer and Einstein). He did his postdoc at the University of Amsterdam and worked as a researcher at CERN (Switzerland) and DESY (Germany) before joining the faculty of Physics and Astronomy at Drake University in 1974 until his retirement in 2014. Lawrence was a scholar in Quantum Field Theory, Particle Physics and Quantum Mechanics, analyzing spin and field equations for half integer particles and discovered a simple mathematical principle that reproduces the theory of relativity. He was an exemplary teacher characterized by uncompromising integrity and a stuborn dedication to science and education at the highest level and served as chair of the Department for over 15 years. His quote, "I am at the center of the universe and I can prove it", a light hearted description of the fact that in the general Theory of Relativity any point in the Universe can be regarded as its center, has become a standard among students. Larry lived a full life, dedicated to his work and wife. He also enjoyed football, golf, chateaubriand and fine wine. He is survived by his wife, Lynn; his daughter, Susan; and his grandson, Ben. Also, their dog Louie.

Interment was held privately. Arrangements were entrusted to Strang Funeral Chapel, 410 E Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL 60030. For more information, please call (847)223-8122 or visit www.StrangFuneral.org.
