Laura Lee Variny, 79, a longtime resident of Grayslake, IL, passed away on February 11, 2026 in Barrington. She was born on April 27, 1946 in Chicago to Gus and Della (nee Vick) Sandahl
Laura devoted 25 years of dedicated service as a Senior Specialist with the Warren Township Assessor’s Office, where she was respected for her professionalism, knowledge, and commitment. Her strong work ethic and warm personality made a lasting impression on colleagues and residents alike.
Above all, Laura was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was the center of her world, and she took great pride in being present for every milestone and memory. She was known for her outgoing spirit and her love of gathering with family and friends. Whether sharing stories around the table or enjoying a meal out at a new restaurant, Laura embraced life’s simple pleasures.
She had a well-known sweet tooth and never passed up an opportunity to indulge in dessert. Laura also found joy in her treasured collectibles, each piece holding a special memory or meaning.
Laura Lee Variny will be remembered for her warmth, her vibrant personality, and the love she so freely gave. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Laura is survived by her children, Charles (Kathy) Vance of Waupaca, WI, Laurie (Stewart) Gow of Crystal Lake, Danielle (Darrin) Smith of Pleasant Prairie, WI, and Steven (Mikki) Vance of Crystal Lake; her grandchildren, AJ (Jessica) Gumino, Nicole Gumino, Kimmie Gumino, Frankie Gumino, Matt (Denise) Gow, Andy Gow, Kelsey Gow, Sarah Gow, Devin Smith, Matthew Smith, Tyler Vance, Cassidy Devine, and Connor Devine; her great grandchildren, Ames, Natalie, Bonnie, Maelea, Francis, Johnny, Lily, and Alessia; her sister, Donna (John) Camacho; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank Variny; and her sisters, JoAnn (Robert) Fabian, and Dolores (Orlando) Cervi.
A Visitation and Funeral Service will be held at Strang Funeral Chapel, 410 E Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL 60030 on Friday, February 20, 2026 from 4pm until 7pm, with a service beginning at 7pm. Interment will take place at Willow Lawn Memorial Park, 24090 N US Highway 45, Vernon Hills, IL 60061 on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at 12pm.
