John R. Clevenger

John Richard Clevenger, 75, a resident of Round Lake Beach, IL, passed away November 16, 2025, at his home.  He was born July 14, 1950 to Robert and Laura Clevenger in Pontiac, IL.

John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Diana Rivera, his children Kim (Matt) Holtman and John (Karin Hemingway) Clevenger, his siblings Shirley Eckel, Bob Clevenger, and Bill (Bobbie) Clevenger, and his many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents. We will all miss his sharp wit, dry humor and passion for learning. John was an avid amateur astronomer with the Lake County Astronomical Society who ground his own telescope mirrors and designed and built quality telescopes, producing many beautiful photos of our night sky. John was passionate about learning and obtained his Masters degree in Astronomy while being a stay-at-home dad with a young toddler. John loved to share his knowledge, and was an engaging teacher on multiple topics, ranging from history, trap shooting, physics and astronomy, to current events. John dearly loved his kids and family in his own special way. But you could always find him on Sundays after church, fully engaged watching the Chicago Bears. 

A visitation is scheduled for Friday, November 21, 2025 at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium 410 E. Belvidere Rd. Grayslake, IL 60030 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM.  The visitation will continue on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at Living Waters Assembly of God 525 N. Atkinson Rd. Grayslake, IL 60030 from 10:30 AM until 11:30 AM with a Memorial service commencing at 11:30am.  Interment will follow the service at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Zion, IL.
