James M. Dunn, Jr., 88, a long-time resident of Lindenhurst, IL, walked into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 2, 2026, after a lengthy illness.
Known to everyone as Jim, he was born on June 30, 1938, in Nashville, TN, to James M., Sr. and Lila Mae Dunn (nee Freudenthal). After high school graduation, Jim relocated to Chicago, IL, where he attended DeVry Technical Institute and graduated as an electronics technician. He was employed at Teletype, Corp. (later AT&T) for 30 years, followed by 8 years at Motorola, Inc. Jim was a verteran of the U.S. Army.
He was devoted to his wife, Kathryn "Edie" Dunn (nee Partington) whom he married on April 2, 1960, in Chicago, IL. The couple had three children: Kathleen, Jay, and Dennis. Jim was so proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A kind, helpful, and generous soul, Jim loved to lend a helping hand. Whether welcoming someone who needed a place to stay the night, snow-blowing his neighbors’ driveways after a snowfall, or chatting with the many dogwalkers who passed by his house, Jim never met a stranger. He never met a dog he didn’t love.
An avid fisherman and canoer, Jim loved the outdoors, especially the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) in Quetico Provencial Park, Ontario, Canada, where he often camped, canoed, and fished with friends and family, especially his son, Dennis.
A jokester by nature, Jim was always quick with a joke – frequently at his own expense – and often to the embarrassment and horror of his family.
His sweet tooth, especially for chocolate, was legendary among family and friends.
His family will be reminded of him through his many household projects, including the stone patio he laid by hand, and favorite woodworking projects like the rec-room entertainment center. His memory is everywhere throughout the Lindenhurst house he shared with Edie and their children.
A life-long Southern Baptist, Jim was active for many years at the 1st Baptist Church of Lindenhurst, IL, often serving as usher or Sunday School bus driver.
Jim is survived by his wife of 66 years, Kathryn "Edie" Dunn, and their family: children Kathleen Schuck and Dennis (Melissa) Dunn; grandchildren Colonel Charles (Jenne) Schuck, Valerie Beiring, Danielle (Nathan) Millikan, and Logan Dunn; great-grandchildren Addison, Sawyer, and Maddox Schuck, Keaton and Annleigh Beiring, and Elianna Millikan; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, James C. Dunn, and his parents.
Jim’s family would like to thank the many healthcare professionals who cared for him in the last phase of his journey, including: the ICU nurses at Advocate Condell Medical Center; the nurses, CNAs, and therapists at The Village at Victory Lakes; the nurses, CNAs, therapists, and patient technicians at Vista Medical Center East; Dr. McClellan and the nurses and CNAs at Allure of Zion; and the nurses and CNAs of LifeChoice Hospice.
