Grayslake

A. Karen Wojciechowski, 75, a resident of Grayslake, IL, passed away on May 30, 2026 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyvile, IL. She was born on January 22, 1951 in Libertyville to Blenn and Dorothy Bell.

Karen devoted more than 30 years of service to the Grayslake Fire District, including 10 years as a Trustee and 20 years as Fire Commissioner. Her commitment to the District, its members, and the community was unwavering, and her presence made a lasting difference in the lives of so many.

Karen was a true pioneer and an inspiration to everyone who knew her. As the first woman president of the Exchange Club in Grayslake and the first woman to serve on the Fire Commission after 125 years of its existence, she broke barriers with grace, courage, and determination. She helped pave the way for other women to lead, serve, and follow in her footsteps.

Beyond her remarkable accomplishments, Karen will be remembered for the person she was at her core—kind, loyal, and endlessly caring. She never met a stranger; everyone she encountered was welcomed as a friend. Her warmth, compassion, and genuine concern for others were felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She made those around her feel seen, valued, and deeply loved.

Karen’s legacy is one of service, strength, compassion, and love. She gave so much of herself to others and leaves behind an example that will continue to inspire for generations to come. She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever honored for the extraordinary life she lived.

Karen married her soulmate Alan and loved her children with a passion that made her family and friends proud. She was also a deeply loving grandmother and great grandmother. Her family was the center of her world. Her devotion and love for Alan and her children was constant, fierce and unconditional, and it was evident in everything she did. To her family, she was not only the heart of the home, but also the source of strength, comfort and unwavering love.

Her family and friends will always remember the way she gave her heart so freely and loved so completely.

The care she gave to others was matched only by the love she poured into her family.

While her accomplishments were many, the greatest legacy she leaves behind is the love she gave as a wife, mother, and friend.

She will be remembered not only for all she achieved, but for the love, warmth, and strength she gave so generously to the people who meant the most to her.

Karen is survived by her husband of 37 years, Alan Wojciechowski; her children, Karen Andersen, Teri (Mark) Staggs, Julie Underwood, Greg Rybarczyk, Justin Wojciechowski, and Jeffery Wojciechowski; her beloved 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Corky Bell, Bradley (Fe) Bell, and Joanne (Bud) Mittelmeyer. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Alicia Wojciechowski; and her grandson, Bryan Andersen.
