Obituary

Walter Duane Soderstrom, know to all as Wally, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2026 at the age of 95.  Born on January 7, 1931 in Oak Park, Illinois, Wally lived a full and vibrant life that touched everyone who knew him.

He graduated from Augustana College and later earned his Master's degree from the University of Indiana.  He proudly served his country during the Korean War before returning home to get married and start a family life.

An exceptional athlete in his younger years, Wally was a talented baseball and football player whose competitive spirit and love of sports remained with him throughout his life.  Whether following his favorite Cubs or Bears, or sharing stories from his playing days, sports were one of his lifelong passions.

Raised in the Lutheran faith, Wally was deeply involved in serving his church, especially through music.  Singing was a lifelong passion, and he enjoyed participating in church choirs throughout his life.  For several years, he was also a proud member of the Swedish Glee Club.

Wally loved to travel and was known to always have a camera around his neck at the ready for a perfect picture.  Many family, friends and travel memories were captured through his photos.

Above all, Wally was devoted to his family.  He is survived by his daughter, Kristen Leonard, and son-in-law Greg; his daughter-in-law, Cheryl Soderstrom, three granddaughters, Meagan, Emma, and Maddie; and two great-grandsons, TJ and Leo, as well as his cherished long time friend, Judy Schrieber and her family.

Wally was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolynn, son Timothy, two brothers, and parents.

A private graveside ceremony will be held for family.  A memorial luncheon celebrating Wally's life will be held on August 21.

Wally's life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and he will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
