Joann H. Schubert, 71, passed away peacefully on October 12 in Grayslake, Illinois. She is preceded in death by her parents, Kauko and Helen Matson; brother, Raymond Matson; sister, Virginia Baade; and husband, Norman Schubert.
As a second generation Finn born in the US, Joann had a vibrant spirit. She was extremely proud of her Finnish heritage and shared that love with her daughters. Joann had a knack for appreciating things that were unusual and unexpected and spent her life creating space to appreciate quirkiness for everyone she loved. She recently retired after many dedicated years working in retail, a career where her natural warmth and ability to connect with people truly shone.
Above all else, Joann loved her friends and family. She cherished every moment spent and loved looking back on the wonderful travel adventures she shared with her beloved late husband, Norman Schubert. She could have fun doing a variety of things whether visiting grandchildren, enjoying a Svengoolie marathon, a pizza lunch at Quonset, or any Spaulding reunion.
Joann's greatest joy and proudest achievement was her family. She is survived by her loving daughters, Jill Olson (Doug), Stacy Worklan (Jeremy), and Renee Champine. She was the incredibly proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren: Matigan, Rebekah, Vance, Delaney, Aaron, Dominick, Gavin, Anna, Brody, and Noah, and was blessed to welcome her first great-grandchild, Joshua. She is also survived by her brother, Tom Matson (Anne), along with many extended family members and close friends who will miss her dearly. Joann's legacy of love, laughter, and quirkiness will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A Memorial Service will be held at Strang Funeral Chapel, 410 E. Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL 60030 on Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 11am. A Memorial Visitation will be held at the funeral chapel on Saturday from 10am until the time of service. The family encourages those who attend to share fond and funny memories as we celebrate Joann's life. Interment will be held privately.
