Obituary's Biography:

Mary Jane Lucas (nee Lett) of Grayslake, IL passed away on February 28, 2014 at the age of 92. She was born on July 18, 1921 in Bertrand, MO to parents Thomas L. Lett and Minnie E. Golightly. Mary Jane Lucas’ legacy touched many communities throughout her life; she held senior leadership and center of influence positions in several organizations to include: President, Grayslake, IL Park Board; Lake County Forest Preserve District; business entrepreneur – Lucas Grocery and Grill; Keynote Speaker on WWII at community schools, Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies; War Bond Promoter with Chicago radio stations; and celebrated as the first person from her home state area to enlist in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC/WAC). She was a strong advocate for the military and nation’s veterans, and a champion voice for Grayslake, Lake County, and many civic organizations. Mary Jane Lucas is survived by her children George J. Lucas II, Marilyn J. Lucas, Charles J. Lucas Jr., five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A visitation and memorial service will be held on Sunday afternoon, 16 March 2014 from 2 – 4:00 PM with a service commencing at 4:00pm at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 410 E. Belvidere Rd. Grayslake, IL 60030. At 4:00 PM, the service will include honor ceremonies from the American Legion and U.S. Military. Interment will be scheduled for Arlington National Cemetery with military honors where Mary Jane Lucas will join her deceased husband COL Charles J. Lucas Sr. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to American Legion Post #659, PO Box 247, Grayslake, IL 60030, for: The Patriotic Pen Scholarships – in Memory of Mary Jane Lucas.   1. Dear George, Marilyn and Chuck,

    So sorry to hear of Mary Jane’s passing. She lived such a rich and rewarding life and was loved by her community and our family as well. I was able to be at your father’s funeral in Arlington and will plan to attend Mary Jane’s.
